No, this is not a scene from Game of Thrones. This is my cute wife walking through the door to the grounds of Arundel Castle, an 11th century fortress built by the Earl of Arundel (information pulled from their website, please visit it!).
We left Brighton early on the 1st of August, 2017. A quick 30 minute drive west on the A27 brought us straight to the town of Arundel. It was a beautiful area that we would have loved to explore more had we not been on such a tight schedule.
There is so much to do and see at this castle. Not only do you have the actual castle rooms, but you can also explore the keep, Fitzalan Chapel, restaurant, museum, and multiple gardens... depending on how much you want to pay. Tickets run anywhere from £13.00 to £22.00. Ash and I decided to focus our attention on the castle interior and surrounding grounds.
Unlike Bodiam and Hastings, Arundel Castle had a more theatrical feel. The grounds were filled with people dressed as Medieval characters, and various stalls provided entertainment for children. This is a fantastic place to come if you have a family.
The castle itself has been through a lot of change since its initial motte and gatehouse. The castle endured damage from the Civil War in the mid 1600's and stayed that way into the early 1700's. Restorations began under the 8th Duke of Norfolk in 1718, and continued on until 1900 under the 15th Duke of Norfolk (seriously, visit the website). Inside the castle Ash and I were able to walk from room to room taking in the rich tapestries and intricate furnishings. Outside, we scaled the stairs to the Keep where we had the ability to see down into secret gardens closed off from public, and take in views of the vast castle grounds. Arundel Castle was a magnificent structure and by far the largest we had seen to date.
Would I recommend visiting this castle? Yes; I would just to experience the sheer size and numerous activities it has to offer. Would I recommend visiting the surrounding area? Hell yes. The attractive city was asking to be explored, and I am sad that Ash and I weren't able to do this when we were there. So.... this is where you can come in.
